Location: Costa Rica

Marian Baker School is committed to providing a nurturing and inspiring environment, fostering compassion, and instilling a life-long love of learning. We offer challenging programs which form critical thinking skills, while providing students the time and space to reflect and to grow intellectually, physically, and emotionally. We encourage students to be knowledgeable of their own culture, to develop an awareness and appreciation of global differences, and to understand the importance of collaboration for the welfare of all.

Marian Baker School (MBS) is a small international English-speaking school educating preschool through high school students.  MBS is located on the verdant eastern slopes of the Central Valley overlooking San Jose.

MBS is fully accredited by the Costa Rican Ministry of Public Education (MEP) and the Advanc-Ed Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS CASI).  The school offers a curriculum that prepares students for colleges and universities in the United States and Costa Rica, as well as other countries.

Philosophy

Marian Baker School recognizes each person as having a unique potential for learning and achievement.  We challenge our students to strive for academic excellence, encouraging them to be persistent in working towards knowledge and skills in all areas.

MBS students achieve a high degree of literacy in both English and Spanish, as well as a solid background in science, mathematics and the social sciences. We nurture creative expression through art, music and drama. Good health and sportsmanship are cultivated through our physical education and sports programs.  We teach and promote critical thinking skills and mental habits that enable students to solve problems constructively and innovatively, and to make responsible and ethical decisions.

MBS provides an engaging atmosphere that fosters enthusiasm for learning.  The school recruits a highly-qualified staff that reflects its philosophy, with teachers who serve as positive role models for the students.  In student-centered classroom settings, teachers   implement strategies for learning in a way that is meaningful to students and relevant in the world.  Our students become active and independent learners through flexible and differentiated learning structures.

MBS regards the students, their families and the whole school staff as an interdependent community.  Communication and cooperation between the school and the home is a vital part of the educational process for each child, and parental support of the school and its programs promotes emotional well-being and a positive attitude towards learning.  MBS celebrates the special heritages of Costa Rica and the United States and other nationalities that make up our school community.   We work together daily to create a respectful and caring small school environment.

With the rising competition for qualified teachers, there is simply no substitute for a real person able to answer questions, and to talk knowledgeably not only about your school, but also your city, country, and region.
